New post (1)

Two little setbacks to report: Last week the pictures taken were unfortunately lost, as the camera card proved unreadable once back home, hence no report. Sadly the lifting in of the first post, which was quite an event, was lost to posterity, but the post is in now, anyway.

Secondly it was a lousy day, weatherwise, at CRC on Wednesday, but the team such as it was did move on ahead.

We can show you two pictures of the first post now in the ground and bolted up.

Some of the Team were delayed by attending a Personal Track Safety Course first thing, but the two pictures above show how the post and its base were on arrival late morning on Wednesday.

It was too wet to grout the base for post 1 on Wednesday, so most of the time was taken up with removing the template for post 2 and tidying up the bolts for same.

This picture shows the foundation ready for fitting post 2, hopefully next week.

Last week the team also finished lifting and re-laying the slabs under the second bench to avoid the ponding problem. You can see the bench in its slightly higher position in the picture above.

Finally the Team did further preparatory work enlarging the holes and sorting out the levels for the first two fence posts which will go in towards the platform.  They also had a good tidy up and loaded up a lot of spoil to take back to Winchcombe.

This picture shows the team in action: Austen, Rob, Jim M, and Pete, with Jim H behind the camera.

On Thursday members of the C&M team are off to Tyseley to load the large blue bricks that we have purchased. These would be suitable for topping off the pit of the turntable that is planned.  We should be able to show a picture of that little operation in next week's blog post.

  1. A turntable is really coming?! Yahhh!!! Has its location been definitively decided? And will it be the one that has been in storage, or will it be coming from elsewhere?

    1. Good news about the turntable project. Yes, it's already on site at Toddington and has been there since arriving from Ashford in April 1982. Part of it was scrapped so I imagine some of it at least will be brand new. An ideal location would be Cheltenham St James Station site where there was a turntable originally. However, Waitrose would need to be demolished and Cheltenham was never going to be a destination for the GWSR anyway. The only town supporters were the Race Course and they were proved right. I guess the turntable will be located at Toddington as there is no room for it either at the Race Course or at Broadway.

  2. I think the suggestion for turntable location was Winchcombe, somewhere near the new coal/goods bay platform. Whether this is an agreed or signed off location, perhaps someone better informed could say?

    1. Yes, I think you are correct as, now that Winchcombe yard is being tidied up and the Broadway extension material has gone, there certainly would be room for a turntable in that area.

  3. I would have thought that the most logical location for a turntable would have been Toddington, i.e. near to where the locos are?

  4. Toddington might be most logical, but where would it go!? As far as I know it's planned to be installed in Winchcombe yard, the opposite side of the running line to the C+W workshops.
Oh, and the remains have been stored at Cheltenham beyond Evesham Road for many years now, not Toddington, and yes, some bits will need to be built new.

    1. I knew that the components were laid at Toddington for many years, gradually disappearing under brambles but I wasn't aware that they'd been removed to a different storage place, thanks for the update. Originally, as I recall, the plan was to place the turntable at Toddington but car parking and the new loco sheds preclude this now. It will be a great asset to have a turntable at Winchcombe, if only to turn locos and rolling stock to even out weathering from time to time.
